Stop and Smell the Roses: A Portland Perspective

You know the saying, “Stop and smell the roses.” As someone who lives in Portland, Oregon, also known as the City of Roses, I can attest to the sheer beauty and serenity these flowers bring. If you ever find yourself in this charming city, make sure to visit our renowned International Rose Test Garden. It’s a must-see destination that epitomizes Portland’s floral charm and will leave you in awe.

My Rose Journey Begins

My personal journey with roses began when my daughter was just a toddler. I vividly remember planting my very first rose bush with her and my husband watching from our big living room window. At the time, I knew nothing about gardening, let alone cultivating roses, but I was eager to learn. One of the most valuable lessons I discovered was the importance of pruning. Every February, you need to trim the rosebush until it looks like mere bare sticks. While it may seem daunting to cut it back so severely, this practice is crucial for fostering robust growth and beautiful blooms in the spring.

Life Lessons from the Garden

This process is a wonderful metaphor for life. Taking a chance to plant something new can be intimidating, much like making significant changes in our lives. Yet, just as roses need pruning, we too must trim back what no longer serves us, even if it feels frightening. Whether it’s letting go of old habits, distancing from negative influences, or making room for new opportunities, the act of pruning is essential for personal growth. And when you encounter pests—those doubters or naysayers—find remedies that nourish your spirit, such as joining a mastermind group, seeking support from an association, working with a personal trainer, or talking to a therapist.

The Power of Mindfulness

And remember, always take the time to stop and smell the roses. This simple act of mindfulness can bring immense joy and happiness into your life. It’s a small, yet powerful reminder to appreciate the beauty around us and to cherish the present moment.

As we move forward into another beautiful season, I hope you find joy in the little things, whether it’s spending time with loved ones, indulging in a favorite hobby, or simply enjoying the tranquility of your garden. Perhaps, like me, you’ll spend some time with your hands in the dirt, nurturing not just your garden but also your soul.

Wishing you all a wonderful day filled with love, relaxation, and the sweet scent of roses!
