Curiosity and Kindness: A Powerful Duo

As we step into 2025, my chosen word for the year is “Curious.”

During my recent appearance on KATU-TV’s AM Northwest, I had the joy of exploring the profound relationship between curiosity and kindness, and how, together, they have the power to create deeper empathy, stronger connections, and a more compassionate world.

The Impact of Curiosity

When I think about curiosity, I think about how it builds bridges between people.

When we approach others with genuine interest, we break down barriers and foster understanding.

A connection can happen anywhere. A casual conversation at the airport, a friendly exchange at the library, or a warm greeting in the workplace can all become places for curiosity and kindness to work their magic.

If you’re looking to have transformational interactions in 2025, then I invite you to join me in acts of meaningful curiosity.

The Kindness-and-Curiosity Ripple Effect

Let’s be clear. Being curious isn’t just about asking questions.

It’s about shifting our focus outward. It starts with something as simple as putting down our phones and tuning into the people around us.

By practicing curiosity and kindness, we create a ripple effect.

A friendly “What are you excited about today?” can open up a world of possibilities in any conversation. Or, in the workplace, extending an invitation for coffee or lunch can spark connections that lead to greater collaboration and mutual understanding.

Building Bridges in Our Personal Relationships

Curiosity also has the power to heal and strengthen personal relationships.

I recently found some old photos my grandmother brought from Danzig, Poland. The history drew me into a curiosity rabbit hole, and I even used my magnifying glass! After spending time with these precious heirlooms, I felt a deeper appreciation and understanding of my grandmother’s history.

I was reminded of the hidden treasures that every story has, just waiting for a curious individual to uncover them.

Let’s Make 2025 a Year Full of Curiosity and Connection

Let’s face it. The world is constantly telling us all how different we are.

I encourage all of us to dare to think differently, to be curious and open ourselves to a world of how many similarities we all really share. Everyone you meet has a childhood, they have an inner world, they have experiences that (chances are) we can relate to.

It’s time to explore the connections waiting to be discovered.

P.S.: A Big Thank You!

I’ve come a long way from my early days at Toastmasters International (shoutout to my amazing old Toastmasters friends) to my very first appearance on AM Northwest back in 2008. I’m glad I’m not as nervous appearing on TV as I was back then!

Table-top sessions like these are so important. Viewers can get a feel for the topic at hand in the friendliest way possible, an invitation conversation. And when you’re committed to inspiring positive change, you want everyone to join in.

A huge thanks to Helen Raptis—it’s always a joy to see you. This was my 6th time on the show, and I loved being back live in the studio!
